100 Years of URSI

The centennial publication 100 Years of URSI is available

In the wake of World War I, a bold vision emerged - one that would unite scientific minds across borders to explore the limitless potential of radio science. In 1919, a pioneering group of nations laid the foundation for global scientific collaboration by establishing the International Research Council and, with it, four scientific Unions. Among them was the Union Internationale de Radiotélégraphie Scientifique, which, in 1928, evolved into the Union Radioscientifique Internationale (URSI) or the International Union of Radio Science.

From its modest beginnings with just three founding members, URSI has flourished into a global organization of more than forty nations, continually expanding the frontiers of radio science. Over the past century, its mission has been shaped by two complementary forces: fundamental scientific discovery through radio techniques and the practical application of electromagnetic waves and signals to meet society’s growing needs. This dynamic balance - sometimes tipping toward theoretical breakthroughs, other times toward transformative applications - has defined URSI’s journey. As we enter a new century of exploration, this duality will undoubtedly persist, driving progress in ways we can only begin to imagine.

To celebrate this remarkable legacy, 100 Years of URSI brings together a rich collection of articles from twenty Member Committees and all ten Commissions, alongside a historical overview. Each contribution offers a unique perspective - some highlighting visionary individuals, others tracing the evolution of groundbreaking ideas. Together, they form a compelling narrative of scientific curiosity, collaboration, and progress.

As we look ahead, URSI remains committed to inspiring future generations of scientists, fostering global partnerships, and unlocking the full potential of radio science. May this centennial reflection not only honor our past but also ignite new ideas for the discoveries yet to come.
